                                                       Overview                         Infrastructure

ZAC-GGM has now become a multi-discipline institution consisting of a genetic and genomic clinic, ten core laboratories, a genetic database of major diseases in the Chinese population and a program of continuing medical education.

Generally, ZAC-GGM is under the guidance of the steering committee. And the center director takes charge of ZAC-GGM directly, who executes the decision made by the steering committee. Moreover, a Academic Committee and a Commercial Committee offer advices for the steering committee.

1. Steering Committee: the committee is founded by Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Beijing ADINOVO Gene Technology Co. Ltd. Its members are appointed by the both sides. They will make important decisions for the center development.

2. Academic Committee: the committee is composed of famous experts in China and abroad in the area of genetic and genomic medicine. They will 1) provide directorial advice to establish the platform and set up relevant standards; 2) offer feasible assistance for the center to win academic resources; 3) promote national and international professional collaboration.

3. Commercial Committee: the committee is composed of entrepreneurs and investors at home and abroad. They will 1) provide advices and suggestions of the market positioning of the product from translational research; 2) offer feasible assistance for the center to win commercial resources; 3) promote national and international business cooperation.

4. Ten Core Laboratories:
** Laboratory of Molecular Medicine
It provides clinical genetic testing and assessment of risk gene
** Laboratory of Cardiovascular Genetics
It provides the disease-causing and predisposing genes relevant to the cardiovascular system
** Laboratory of Cancer Genomics
It provides molecular and pathologic tumor diagnosis as well as genetic testing by means of 44k and 244k aCGH using Agilent Microarray Scanner System. The patients will be provided the risk assessment of cancer.
** Laboratory of Nutrition Genomics
It focuses on the relationship between nutrition intake and unique human genetic code. Characteristics of some genes and how their variants exert impact on the management of nutrition in human body are investigated.
** Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics
Targeted on the effectiveness and safety of the drug, it investigates on the relationship between gene variants and drug response to improve the medication.
** Laboratory of Mitochondrial Genetics
It focuses on the relationship between mitochondrial genetic variants and metabolism / cancer/ aging.
** Laboratory of Genomic Sports Medicine
It investigates the relationship between genome and the sport talents to provide the evidence for enrollment selection of the athletes.
** Laboratory of Cytogenetics
It provides high-quality chromosome analysis of amniotic fluid, peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph node, skin, malignant tissue, and etc. And it detects the chromosome abnormality. The service of establishing the immortally transformed cell line is provided as well.
** Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics
It provides thorough metabolic testing for many congenital metabolic disease as well as neonatal screening.
** Laboratory of Molecular Genetics

5. Genetic and genomic clinic:
The genetic and genomic clinic is launched by Ming QI (PhD, FACMG) in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University on Oct. 8th, 2005. It is the first of such kind of clinics in China.
5.1. Service:
The results of recent researches show that any kind of disease is due to the impact of both genetic factors and environmental factors. A important subject of the genomic medicine is genetic counselling, which provides comprehensive services of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention for the patients and their relatives, based on the knowledge of medical genetics and human genomics.
5.2. Clients:
- Patients with familial disease / tumor history and their relatives;
- Patients showing some clinical symptom but without final diagnosis;
- Individuals requiring identification in disputed paternity or for medical jurisprudence;
- Individuals who are now healthy but want to do the disease risk assessment ;
- Individuals requiring healthy inquiry (of nutrition intake or life style).
5.3. Technical Platform
The new technology and management standard of disease diagnosis and genetic testing accepted in American is introduced in our laboratory of molecular medicine (LMM). And LMM is now applying for the accreditation by the College of American Pathologists, certified by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act 1988). Moreover, it takes advantage of the genetic database of major diseases in the Chinese population, as well as the state-of-the-art facilities of the center, including the ABI 3130 DNA sequencing machine, the Agilent microarray Scanner System, and etc.
5.4. Experts of the Clinic
       Ming QI---PhD, the fellow of American College of Medical Genetics, HUGO Lecturer and CAP        molecular lab inspector. Zhejiang University, China; University of Rochester, USA.
       Taosheng HUANG---PhD, the fellow of American College of Medical Genetics. University of        California, Irvine, USA; Zhejiang University, China.
5.5. Advisors of the clinic (and some of them will visit the clinic and provide services of genetic counselling each year.)
       Arnold Motulsky---University of Washington, USA£»Zhejiang University, China;
       Charles Epstein---University of California, San Francisco, USA;
       Peter Byers---University of Washington, USA;
       Judith Hall---University of British Columbia, Canada;
       Douglas Wallace---University of California, Irvine, USA; Zhejiang University, China;
       Diana Baker---University of Michigan, USA;
       ChinTo Fong---University of Rochester, USA.

6. Genetic database of major diseases in the Chinese population
Based on the major and common disease in the Chinese population, the project aims to establish large-scale sample repository and database of genotype and phenotype of patients, as well as that of the healthy people as the control.

Now, ZAC-GGM is starting this project combined with several national famous hospital, such as Tongren Hospital, Tiantan Hospital, Chaoyang Hospital, Beijing and etc. The clinical institution will provide the definite and complete case file of the patients and their blood sample, which is the foremost job of establishing the repository and database. Using the database, we could investigate on the genotype relevant to these diseases, and help to design and develop drugs that are tailored by the genome profile of the patients. It is the important basis of personalized medicine.

7. Program of continuing medical education
The center has signed the contract with the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. We will combined to establish the continuing medical education base and hold all kinds of the training program and symposiums. It is our expectation to hold ten training course every year, which will benefit a thousand students. And after the learning and examination, the students will be accredited CME credits (A Class) and the CME certificate of the Chinese Ministry of Health. The CME program will update the physicians, investigators and other health care providers on the latest knowledge of genetic and genomic medicine.
